A lovely friend of mine is dreaming of doing up her little hideaway in bustling Sydney. Its liking stumbling into a little oasis, perfect wild gardens right in the heart of suburbia, just up my alley! The house screams Mid Century style to me, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be like a little replica home, it needs to be its own statement. My friend is studying to be a building designer, I can’t wait to see her designs as she emerges in the industry! I know they are going to be amazing like her, in fact, I am going to work with her on our house lift for this very reason.
I am a big fan of mid century homes. I love their honesty, simple lines and big windows. The flow of the inside, out into the elements. For me this is what every home should aspire to do. If I ever get to build my dream home, it will most certainly be drawing inspiration from the great Architects of that time. Some of my all time favourites are Kaufmann house, Farnsworth House, Stahl House, and Audette House to name a few.
When it comes to furnishing the interiors of these homes, I don’t think you need to rush out to a replica store and purchase furniture modeled on what might have originally appeared in the home. (You may well want a few pieces just because they are amazing in their own right, thank you Wegner and Eames). If you take a look at the style, you will notice its not fussy. It is about great design, clean lines, embracing nature and lifestyle. This era of Architecture and interior design stemmed from an aversion to the ornate excesses of the recent Victorian style, and a reaction to industrialisation, it was therefor more organic in style and less formal. I say take inspiration from Mid Century design and make it your own.
Here are some interiors to inspire you, they sure inspire me!
